Executive Director

Montclair-based IMANI Programs is entering a new chapter. The organization’s Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Tawaina Turner-Dones as its new executive director.

The leadership transition marks a significant milestone for one of Montclair’s most respected community organizations. IMANI has served generations of children and families through educational enrichment, culturally sensitive academic programming and mentoring. The organization’s community-building initiatives have always focused on promoting high-achievement amongst students of color at all levels of education.

Turner-Dones brings extensive experience in business development, strategic partnerships, fundraising, leadership, information technology, consulting, marketing, and community engagement. Throughout her career, she has developed innovative programs, cultivated collaborative partnerships, and championed initiatives that strengthen organizations and expand opportunities for the communities they serve. A graduate of Spelman College, she earned an MBA from Emory University and has held progressively senior positions, both domestic and abroad, at General Electric, JP Morgan Chase and Citigroup Inc.

“The Board of Directors is delighted to welcome Tawaina Turner-Dones as Executive Director of IMANI Programs,” said Terry Trigg-Scales, Board Chair. “Her exceptional leadership, collaborative spirit, and commitment to community make her uniquely qualified to lead the organization into its next chapter. We are confident that she will build upon IMANI’s remarkable legacy while expanding its impact throughout Montclair and beyond.”

Turner-Dones succeeds one of IMANI’s founding members JoAnn McCullough, who led the nonprofit since its inception more than 25 years ago. McCullough, who remains active on the Board, is assisting in the transition of leadership. Turner-Dones will also continue to work with founding member Evelyn Gay, who stepped in to keep IMANI’s programs running smoothly during the transition. Gay, also a board member,  will continue serving as Program Coordinator.

“I am honored to be selected as the new Executive Director of IMANI. The amazing founders’ and spirited volunteers’ unwavering commitment is truly inspiring,” said Turner-Dones. “My intention is to continue promoting IMANI’s drive and dedication to excellence to help Montclair Public School students reach their full potential and ultimately become college-ready. “

IMANI is currently recruiting volunteers for some of its 2026-2027 programs, including essay writing coaches for the College Advocacy Program. To volunteer, learn more about IMANI’s programs, or donate, visit imaniprograms.org or email imani@imaniprograms.com.
