Mini IMANI
Laying the foundation for future academic achievement
Recognizing that academic success begins in kindergarten, the Mini IMANI program was launched at Nishuane Elementary School in 2004 with a focus on achieving reading and writing excellence. It is currently offered to all Montclair public school students in Grades K-5.
IMANI Reading Circles
IMANI Reading Circles are child-driven, parent-supported “book clubs.” The Reading Circles enable children to strengthen their reading and language arts skills while socializing with their peers in small group discussions and activities geared to their reading level and interests.
The IMANI Reading Circles use the same model as the high school study groups with a ratio of 5-8 students to one trained parent facilitator. The groups read age-appropriate, culturally relevant books, and participate in child-driven discussions and related activities that promote critical thinking.
The program is open to all children in kindergarten through 5th grade with an emphasis on children of color. Reading Circles meet every other Sunday during the spring and fall semesters. Full support of a parent or guardian is an essential component of the program.
Volunteers are needed!
